WIN’s Anna Myers Speaks with ITV on the Lack of Whistleblowing Protection in Guernsey

Date Published: 29 January 2026

UK broadcaster ITV published an article (Thursday, 22 January 2026) on how islanders in Guernsey feel they have few, if any, safe options when blowing the whistle on wrongdoing on the self-governing island and British Crown Dependency.  Islanders are now calling for the introduction of a whistleblowing law to protect those who raise concerns at work.

They say the lack of legal protection leaves employees vulnerable to unfair repercussions from employers if they flag any problems they might have in the workplace - effectively silencing them in too many circumstances.

ITV interviewed Sally, who worked for the States of Guernsey and said she was ultimately forced to leave her workplace after flagging concerns about one of her managers. Though she reported the matter to the organisation's designated Whistleblowing Officer; she says she was never contacted throughout the course of their investigation. Sally argues that without formal legislation in place to reinforce employers' duties, the policy "is not worth the paper it’s written on.

WIN’s Executive Director Anna Myers said the gap in legislation leaves islanders like Sally vulnerable.

"People can find themselves in a fight they never intended," she explained,"... [they] do need the option and availability to go to the regulatory authority and get the right accountability mechanism."
